Apps for the Media: ‘Newseum’ newspaper front pages

THE UK is represented by just three titles – The Guardian, The Times and the Lancashire Evening Post – but fear not. This free app, for the iPhone or the iPad, is absolutely jam-packed with newspaper front pages from around the world.

So, from Spain, for instance, it’s the front pages of ARA, El Punt (Barcelona and Girona editions), La Vanguardia, Diario De Cadiz, Granada Hoy, Segre and El Pais.

And from South Africa, it’s Cape Times, The Mercury, Business Day and The Witness.

And so on.

It’s top ten (for reasons that are not immediately obvious) are Cape Times (South Africa), Dawn (Pakistan), The Florida Times-Union (USA), Gulf News (United Arab Emirates), Het Nieuwsblad (Belgium), The Kansas City Star (USA), LeDroit (Canada), The Royal Gazette (Bermuda), The Times (UK) and USA Today (USA).

There are dozens to choose from. Hundreds, possibly. And of course, they are not just a window on the world, they are a design delight (or for newspaper designers, potential inspiration).

You’ll be asked if you would like to share your location, so it can pick your nearest newspapers. And you can, of course, choose your favourites, to return to, time and again.

It is, remember, just front pages. If a story is continued from the front page into an inner one, you are unable to read on.

But it’s a lovely thing. Check it out, here.
