The Media in Figures: National newspaper sales in Scotland

THE Times newspaper saw its average sales in Scotland increase, year-on-year – rising from an average 19,567 during August last year and an average 20,420 last month.

And, says the newspapers circulation body, ABC, it was not the only daily and Sunday national newspaper widely available in Scotland to experience a year-on-year increase. The Independent on Sunday also saw its average circulation rise: from 5,522 to 5,896.

In summary, the daily newspapers figures concern sales in Scotland between August last year and last month and reveal the following:

Daily Mirror – 11.2 per cent drop = from 20,363 on average during August last year, to 18,079 last month;

Daily Record – 10.3 per cent drop = from 227,445 on average during August last year, to 203,941 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 17.4 per cent drop = 50,621 to 41,799;

The Scottish Sun – 7.6 per cent drop = 266,289 to 246,066;

Scottish Daily Express – 12.4 per cent drop = 55,519 to 48,636;

Scottish Daily Mail – 5.3 per cent drop = 98,543 to 93,321;

Daily Telegraph – 8.2 per cent drop = 20,256 to 18,599;

Financial Times – 9.6 per cent drop = 2,557 to 2,312;

The Guardian – 8.5 per cent drop = 11,605 to 10,623;

i – 1.4 per cent drop = 18,979 to 18,712;

Independent – 3.5 per cent drop = 3,099 to 2,990; and

The Times – 4.4 per cent up = 19,567 to 20,420.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 19.4 per cent down = 28,720 to 23,161;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 11.8 per cent down = 199,076 to 175,525;

Sunday Mail – 12 per cent down = 263,426 to 231,821;

Sunday Mirror – 15.6 per cent down = 21,556 to 18,202;

The People – 8.9 per cent down = 10,620 to 9,678;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 7.3 per cent down = 89,663 to 83,079;

Scottish Sunday Express – 17.1 per cent down = 33,772 to 28,002;

The Sunday Post – 11.5 per cent drop = 165,969 to 146,940;

Independent on Sunday – 6.8 per cent up = 5,522 to 5,896;

The Observer – 8.7 per cent down = 15,444 to 14,093;

Sunday Telegraph – 5.6 per cent down = 17,530 to 16,543; and

Sunday Times – one per cent down = 47,416 to 46,927.
