Your Noon Briefing: British Journalism Awards, Johnston Press, etc

A STORY from the Commonwealth Games during the summer has partly earned its writer a nomination in this year’s British Journalism Awards, run by the trade title, Press Gazette.

In July, The Times’ Edinburgh-based Katie Gibbons was reporting – here – that Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt, was seemingly unimpressed being in Glasgow.

And the resulting huge media interest included Bolt’s camp seeking to rebut the story and The Times (and its then Scotland editor, the now late Angus Macleod) vigorously defending it.

And noted here, the story was among a portfolio of pieces to have contributed towards Gibbons’ shortlisting.

Also among the nominees is former Scotsman writer, Gethin Chamberlain.

The winners will be revealed on the 2nd of next month.

“Speaking to The Drum after a keynote speech at MediaTel’s Media Playground event, Highfield accepted that significant changes across the business – which has struggled under a mountain of debt as well as navigating through the digital publishing revolution – had affected the morale of staff but said that journalists were aware of what the company was up against.”
