Your Noon Briefing: Scotsman group editorial appointments, local news recommendations, etc

PLANS to merge the editorial desks at the Scotsman group of newspapers – The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News – have taken a step forward with the naming of key editorial staff, with group-wide responsibilities.

While the papers are still seeking someone to fill the role, group head of content, other roles such as group head of sport have been established.

Staff tomorrow are to be presented with further details regarding roles and work patterns. At the end of October (and noted here), it was announced that between 35 and 45 editorial posts were at risk of redundancy, from a reported complement of 171 when including casual workers.

Meanwhile, the group heads are as follows:

Deputy editors: Kenny Farquharson and Euan McGrory

Group head of production – Mark Adamson

Group head of magazines – Alison Gray

Group head of sport – Donald Walker

Group head of pictures – Roger Jonathan

THE UK Government should consider opening up support schemes for local news, such as the Community Radio Fund, to those delivering hyperlocal news on other platforms – according to the findings of a report about the provision of local news.

The report follows a funding programme run these last two years by the Carnegie UK Trust.

Five local news projects were each funded to the tune of £10,000. And the resulting feedback has led to the trust coming up with 11 recommendations for ‘how government, regulators, funders and other local news providers can support community-led local news’.

Another recommendation is that the Big Lottery Fund should consider putting together a new funding programme dedicated to the hyperlocal news sector.

The report can be found here.
