The Media in Figures: Sales in Scotland of national newspapers

FOR the third, consecutive month, the year-on-year circulation in Scotland of The Times newspaper has increased, according to the latest official figures.

Says newspapers auditing body, ABC, the average circulation in Scotland of the paper during last month was 18,771 – up 3.4 per cent on the average of 18,155 during March last year.

The February 2014 to February 2015 year-on-year figure was a 2.1 per cent increase, as reported here, while the January 2014 to January 2015 one was a 2.4 per cent increase, as reported, here.

The paper was the only national daily or Sunday newspaper to experience a year-on-year increase between March last year and last month.

In summary, ABC figures read, as follows:

Daily Mirror – 17.6 per cent drop = from 18,032 on average during March last year, to 14,860 last month;

Daily Record – 11.1 per cent drop = from 214,914 on average during March last year, to 190,985 last month;

Daily Star of Scotland – 12.5 per cent drop = 43,695 to 38,225;

The Scottish Sun – 9.1 per cent drop = 246,699 to 224,298;

Scottish Daily Express – 12.8 per cent drop = 50,842 to 44,324;

Scottish Daily Mail – 2.4 per cent drop = 91,519 to 89,232;

Daily Telegraph – 8.1 per cent drop = 17,268 to 15,865;

Financial Times – 11 per cent drop = 2,430 to 2,162;

The Guardian – 11.1 per cent drop = 10,027 to 8,917;

i – 11.6 per cent drop = 18,751 to 16,585;

Independent – 6.8 per cent drop = 2,632 to 2,453; and

The Times – 3.4 per cent up = 18,155 to 18,771.

Meanwhile, the Sunday titles’ sales figures in Scotland were as follows:

Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday – 14.3 per cent down = 23,215 to 19,894;

The Scottish Sun – Sunday – 11.2 per cent down = 175,423 to 155,737;

Sunday Mail – 11.8 per cent down = 239,870 to 211,448;

Sunday Mirror – 12.8 per cent down = 17,206 to 14,996;

The People – 10.7 per cent down = 9,047 to 8,083;

Scottish Mail on Sunday – 5.2 per cent down = 81,589 to 77,333;

Scottish Sunday Express – 11.7 per cent down = 28,573 to 25,222;

The Sunday Post – ten per cent down = 151,041 to 135,925;

Independent on Sunday – 3.9 per cent down = 4,853 to 4,666;

The Observer – 11 per cent down = 14,042 to 12,498;

Sunday Telegraph – 10.8 per cent down = 15,728 to 14,034; and

Sunday Times – 4.9 per cent down = 45,405 to 43,192.
