The editor of radio drama at BBC Radio Scotland is has been appointed department head. 

Bruce Young takes over the day-to-day running of the department on Monday from Patrick Tayner, who has announced he is to leave the BBC later this year. 

Says Donalda MacKinnon, Head of Programmes at BBC Scotland: "Patrick has given BBC Scotland a world-class reputation for radio drama and his list of credits include hugely popular adapations of Sherlock Holmes, Paul Temple and now the epic project involving every one of John Le Carre's Smiley novels. 

"In the past two years he has led the re-introduction of contemporary plays to the Radio Scotland schedule. Patrick and his team have formed strong partnerships with other drama providers in Scotland and have provided opportunities for scores of new writers and actors. 

"His name on a production has become a hallmark for quality and he will be greatly missed, but he leaves the radio drama department in great shape and with a brilliant team of new and seasoned producers whose skills and talent he has helped develop. Patrick will complete the dramatisation of the Le Carre novels before he leaves."

Young will report to BBC Radio Scotland head, Jeff Zycinski.

Added MacKinnon: "We also want to strengthen the working relationship and synergies of the TV and radio drama departments, and Bruce will work closely with Anne Mensah and her team in developing the overall BBC Scotland drama offering."
