Record Claims Blow for Press Freedom, as Defamation Case is Thrown Out

The Daily Record is claiming to have scored “a major victory for Press freedom” when a defamation case made against it was thrown out of court.

It followed a complaint by former Scottish Socialist Party MSP Frances Curran. She objected after being called a "political scab" by former colleague Tommy Sheridan in an exclusive interview published by the newspaper published on August 7, four years ago.

But temporary judge Morag Wise ruled Curran had not been defamed and threw the complaint out of court.

Says the paper, the judgment helps “ensure all Scottish newspapers can continue to report fearlessly”.
