The Scotsman newspaper is to up the price of its weekday editions to £1, an increase of 15p.
Writes editor-in-chief, John McLellan, today, it is with "with regret" that the decision had been made, which also sees the price of the Saturday edition of the paper increase: to £1.30.
Says McLellan: "This brings us into line with other comparable titles like the Herald in Glasgow, the Times and Independent, which have been £1 on weekdays for several months. The Guardian and Telegraph are £1.20."
He continued: "This is due to the continued increase in the price of raw materials, the ongoing economic downturn which is affecting advertising and also the changes to the way readers wish to access information in the digital age. To this end, we are investing in the development of our iPad application, which will be launched later this month and will give Apple table users access to our pages for £7.99 a month, the equivalent of £2 a week."
He uses page three of today's edition of The Scotsman to, among other things, promote www.scotsman.com, and the chance for readers to save up to 36 per cent by taking out a subscription to both The Scotsman and sister title, Scotland on Sunday.
He ends, thus: "Whether in print, mobile, tablet or desktop, The Scotsman still provides the most balanced and comprehensive daily coverage of Scottish affairs. As well as the news, when it comes to in-depth, quality analysis of Scottish politics, business, arts and sport, The Scotsman is still setting the pace, and we are proud to maintain the best foreign news service produced in Scotland."
