Places fast running out at NUJ debate on newspaper ethics

PLACES are fast running out for a debate on newspaper ethics – involving two of Scotland’s best-known journalists, Iain Macwhirter and Rob Edwards.

Organised by the Edinburgh Freelance branch of the NUJ, the event is taking place on Monday evening at the Edinburgh Filmhouse. It is for NUJ members only.

Both Macwhirter and Edwards are arguably best known for the work for The Herald and Sunday Herald newspapers. Columnist and commentator, Macwhirter, and environment writer, Edwards, will be leading a discussion about ethical standards on TV and in the press in the light of the Leveson Inquiry into press standards.

Say the organisers: “They’ll be touching on topics such as the ethical dimension of writing campaigning stories, the questionable techniques of current affairs reporting and the unregulated landscape of Twitter and Facebook.”

Next month, the branch is hosting an event being attended by the NUJ’s general-secretary, Michelle Stanistreet.
