Scotsman obituary pays tribute to ‘Smoking Beagles’ investigative journalist, Mary Beith

THE investigative journalist behind one of the country’s most celebrated news stories ever, and who spent her life latterly in the north of Scotland, is the subject of an extensive biography in today’s Scotsman newspaper.

Mary Beith was the journalist who revealed, during the mid-70s, the infamous ‘smoking beagles’ lab tests which involved dogs being forced to smoke cigarettes.

Writes Alison Shaw, Beith’s later years – she died in Sutherland on Sunday, aged 73 – included freelancing for The Scotsman.

Shaw also reports that Beith also worked for a while at the Sunday Mail newspaper, in Glasgow.
