New Ways of Working Unveiled by Herald Group

Between 15 and 20 redundancies are being predicted at the Herald group of newspapers, following the planned introduction of a new production system that will see, among other things, a central news hub operating for all three of the group’s titles: The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times.

Also on the cards is a single website for all the titles, with the decision being made that, with the exception of exclusives, all stories will be put on to the internet whenever they happen, instead of having to wait (as is the case now) until after the newspapers have been printed.

The new system will result in some posts no longer being required, but redundancies are expected to be only voluntary - not least because of the industrial muscle shown by staff just four months ago, including various walk-outs, when there was a threat of compulsory redundancy.

Said Paul Holleran, the Scottish Organiser of the National Union of Journalists: “Management are saying that the change will be evolutionary, but the way they described it was quite revolutionary. They appear to be trying to take the workforce with them this time, but my experience of new systems being implemented is that it is never an easy process. It will have to be done right.”

The new system could be in place as early as December and it prompted half a dozen speeches, yesterday, to staff by various senior managers at the papers, including Herald editor, Charles McGhee, Sunday Herald, Richard Walker, and Evening Times editor, Donald Martin.

According to our trusty mole, the word, ‘change’ was uttered some 47 times, with the words, ‘internet/web’ (25), ‘online’ (22) and ‘multimedia’ (16) perhaps predictably the next most frequent.

Donald Martin is said to have “impressed” with four showings of ‘superb journalism’ in less than 90 seconds.

Special mentions go out to new head of human resources, Ross Garner - for managing to use ‘transformational activities’ as a euphemism for ‘change’ - and to editorial executive, Rob Bruce, for his bold attempts at management speak, including two mentions of ‘big bang’, and his description of the long-awaited new production system as the ‘single business solution’.

Meanwhile, it is said there was much doom and gloom from McGhee, with his warnings of ‘peril’ unless there are changes within what is a ‘terminal business of decline’. Walker is reported to have spent five minutes apologising about the Herald & Times lagging behind in the ‘digital revolution’ (five mentions), but earns special praise for describing the papers’ websites as ‘the tail at the end of the donkey’.

‘News’, by the way, was uttered eight times. Maybe all is not lost.

  • "I was discussing the "talks" last night with a colleague... It was shocking how much of a propaganda exercise it seemed to be, in retrospect. Most people are onside with the changes (including me), and a lot of it seemed to make sense, but then then the redundancies announcement was slipped in almost subliminally, with a rapid four-minute slide show, by the new HR head. They say the new system will allow for a smaller workforce, but the fact is the new system is months away being installed, so they have little idea of how it will all pan out. The pilot isn't even working yet (they're having tech probs), and they haven't got any solid dates on the table, despite saying they hope "early 2008" at the talks yesterday. Despite all this, they have given people until November 23 to apply for voluntary. So people will be away well before the new system is in.... It stinks of slashing jobs for more profit, or to pay for the new system. Meanwhile we all have to work harder."

  • "Paul Holleran is right, this will have to be done VERY carefully. When they tried a similar move and system at the Birmingham Post and Mail it all went horribly wrong and eventually had to be abandoned as unworkable. However, during the period prior to collapse it wasa, of course, the staff who suffered through redundancies, stress, overwork, being made to try and achieve the impossible etc, and the papers took some years to recover from the experience."
