There was, understandably, much wailing and gnashing of teeth following Scotland’s exit from the rugby World Cup on Sunday evening, prompting The Herald’s Kevin Ferrie to yesterday remark: “Immediately after the match there was some knee-jerk criticism from pundits that the side had left it too late before playing with the abandon that almost saw them recover from 13-6 down to steal the victory in the final quarter.”

Knee-jerk criticism along the lines of Andy Nicol’s observations in the same newspaper, perhaps? “Why, oh why, did Scotland wait until the last 15 minutes before they started to play with any purpose and penetration?”
