SNP newspaper? Why not The Herald?

SORRY to be the bearer of gloomy opinion, but this rumour about a nationalist paper being launched to compete against the Herald and Scotsman doesn’t work for me.

If you missed it in Sunday’s Observer, then you might have picked it up in yesterday’s Times.

In essence, you take a familiar SNP business name – in this case, Brian Soutar – and suggest he wants a paper that excitedly reports every whim of Alex Salmond.

The problems with this story are many, and, if I miss one, feel free to comment.

Talk of a nationalist newspaper isn’t new. It cropped up in the mid-1990s when it was alleged a group of pro-Nat businessmen wanted to buy The Herald. So this story has form.
