Media Release: First-ever Sunday Bookbug sessions for toddlers

LIBRARY Bookbug sessions for toddlers are this weekend being held on a Sunday for the first time ever in Scotland.

Bosses at East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure decided to stage the extra Bookbug events after an online survey of parents showed there was a demand.

They already organise about 20 Bookbug sessions throughout the week, but the first on a Sunday takes place this weekend at 11.30am, on February 7, in the Barrhead Foundry library.

A Bookbug session encourages children, up to the age of three, to mix with other children, play games and have stories and nursery rhymes read to them by their parents in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Catriona Wallace, head of Early Years, at the Scottish Book Trust, said: “East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure is the first in Scotland to pilot Sunday Bookbug sessions and it’s an excellent idea.

“It means parents or carers that work during the week will have an extra opportunity to attend a Bookbug Session over the weekend and spend valuable time with their children and with other parents in the community.”

Chief executive of East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure – the organisation that runs sports, leisure and cultural services in the area – Anthony McReavy said:

“Our aim is to give the public what they want and make it as easy as possible for them to participate in sport, leisure or cultural activities.

“We conducted an online survey and parents told us they wanted extra Bookbug sessions on a Sunday and that’s exactly what we’re giving them.

“These events are great fun for both the children and their parents and I expect our new Sunday sessions will be very popular.”
