Media Release: News UK hosts third News Academy Summer School for aspiring young journalists

NewsAcademy

THE News Academy’s third annual Summer School is taking place in The News Building between Sunday 23rd- Friday 28th August.

Big-hitters from The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times will be sharing their knowledge and tips with aspiring young journalists from across the four corners of Britain.

Twenty 18-25 year-olds will be selected from hundreds of applications and will spend the week at News UK’s London Bridge headquarters, creating and compiling their very own newspaper from a real-life newsroom. On the last day, the students will travel to Newsprinters Broxbourne – the world’s biggest print site – to see their hard work roll off the presses.

Throughout the week, they will enjoy masterclasses from world-renowned journalists.

Last year, under the editorial guidance of Paul Clarkson, now managing editor of The Sun, students initiated once in a life-time opportunities including interviewing government ministers and A-list celebrities.

They were also taught the tricks of the trade by experienced campaigners including The Times’ columnist, Robert Crampton, and respected Sun political columnist, Trevor Kavanagh.

On the back of last year’s summer school a number of the graduates are now writing regularly for News UK titles.

In April, Guy Birchall was announced as the first graduate to get a full-time job at The Sun, now working alongside former summer schoolers, George Harrison and Shaklee Hashim, on the title.

2014 grad, Josh McStay, celebrated his first scoop in The Times last month, with fellow grad, Shingi Mararike, spending this summer as a paid intern at The Sunday Times, under the watchful eye of The Sunday Times editorial director and Sunday Times Magazine editor, Eleanor Mills.

For all aspiring journalists, the summer school is a week filled with opportunities and teaching they will never forget.

Applications for the summer school close at midnight on July 24th, with students needing to write 500 words on a topic they are passionate about.

Summer School graduate, Guy Birchall, said: “The Summer School was a whirlwind of a week where I worked with some of the finest journalists in the business and met columnists I’d read avidly since I was a teenager. That week set me well on my way towards getting a job at the country’s best selling newspaper.”

The Times deputy editor, Emma Tucker, said: “I’m looking forward to meeting this year’s News Academy recruits. I hope one day to see them setting the news agenda and at the forefront of News UK’s journalism.”

News UK director of communications, Daisy Dunlop, said: “The Summer School has provided an array of young journalistic talent for our titles. We are looking forward to helping 2016’s best reporters to break into this exciting and ever-competitive industry.”
