THE coronation of a former Scotsman newspaper journalist to the presidency of the National Union of Journalists took place over the weekend.
At the union’s annual conference, in Belfast, James Doherty stepped up from the post of vice-president. Taking his place as vice-president is BBC Scotland’s Peter Murray, who will become president next year.
Doherty – who also was a writer on the The Big Issue in Scotland magazine – is currently media manager at Glasgow Culture and Sport.
Our correspondent at the conference wrote: “James had a very good [conference]. Deputising for Michelle Stanistreet [the president, his predecessor], he won many new admirers for his sure chairing and ready wit. He also looked stunning in his Irish tartan kilt, black jumper and black socks at the [conference] dinner.”
