A TEAM of seven Scots growing moustaches modelled on archive photos, will shave their upper lips on Thursday (01 December 2011) having raised nearly £1,000 for charity.

The team – who all work at Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) – modelled their moustaches on photos they found in the organisation’s photographic archives.

From the tonsorial elegance of Victorian shooting parties, to the hand-brushed, stiff upper lips of Edwardian country gentlemen, the images in the RCAHMS collections revealed evidence of a ‘golden age’ of moustache wearing.

Now the money raised by the RCAHMS team will go to Movember, the charity which aims to raise money and awareness about men’s health (specifically prostate and testicular cancer) by encouraging men to grow a moustache for the 30 days of November.

Each member of the RCAHMS team chose a different historical photograph from the archives to model their moustaches on.

Alasdair Burns, RCAHMS publications and graphics officer, said: “One hundred years ago, men really knew how to cultivate and look after their facial hair. Our archive photographs are a window on a world of lost moustaches and we’ve done our best to emulate them. Movember is a fun way to raise awareness of serious issues about men’s health, and the RCAHMS ‘Mo Bros’ had great fun being involved – who knows we may even do it again next year!”
