Media Release: See the footmarks religion left through history with France’s Abbeys, Cathedrals and Monasteries for a cultural re-enlightenment

WHETHER you’re on a path to spiritual enlightenment or just looking for a cultural journey through the religious heritage of France, let us guide you through these snapshots of history.

Abbeys and monasteries

From the UNESCO World Heritage Site Fontenay Cisterian Abbey in Burgundy which has remained virtually unchanged since 1118, to the world-famous Mont Saint Michel Benedictine Abbey in Normandy, and from the Saint-Savin Abbey in Poitou-Charentes which is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the contemporary Fontevraud Abbey in the Loire Valley, architecture will only be the start to the historical heritage that these edifices hold between their walls.

Cathedrals

Drawing tourists from the world over, France has three cathedrals that are cultural emblems of their own: Strasbourg Cathedral in Alsace as the tallest cathedral in France, the Reims Cathedral in Champagne-Ardenne as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural phenomenon known as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Way of St. James

Although the varying routes were established for pilgrimages, hikers and travelers also enjoy discovering the different trails for the wealth of historical heritage gems all along the way. From discovering the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cité de Carcassonne to the Roman cloister of the Cathedral of Puy-en-Velay, one of Europe’s most beautiful cathedrals, you can kick off your route from anywhere and strike gold.
