SO, fare thee well, John Milne, who, on Sunday, brought the curtain down on a glittering BBC Scotland career, spanning almost 40 years.
With Sunday Live, the journalist who was at the helm of the first-ever edition of BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland (GMS), was accorded on-air good wishes from colleagues. Sunday marked not only his retirement, but his 65th birthday.
That said, he may do the occasional TV presenting, for Newsnight Scotland. Until recently, he presented the Saturday morning show on BBC Radio Scotland, Newsweek Scotland, now the fiefdom of Derek Bateman, also once of the GMS parish.
Milne might be spotted in the future, as a contributor to a TV documentary being made about 50 years of Scottish news. In the meantime, it is understood he will be devoting his energies towards the Aberlour Child Care Trust charity, of which he is a governor.
In total, Milne anchored GMS for over 20 years. His face became as recognisable as his voice during a ten-year spell presenting BBC Scotland’s flagship news programme, Reporting Scotland.
Born and brought up in Dundee, John’s journalism career began with DC Thomson before moving to The Scotsman. Immediately before starting at the BBC, he worked for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, in Berne.
