Beeb wins handsomely in ‘battle of the bells’

BBC Scotland’s live coverage of ‘the bells’, signalling the New Year, saw it secure an estimated 63 per cent of the television viewing audience in Scotland, with Jools Holland’s music show on BBC Two and and STV’s Scotland’s Always Had Talent, each taking around ten per cent.

Translated, BBC One Scotland secured around 1.168 million viewers in the ‘Battle of the Bells’. Instead of producing a live show, as it has in the past, STV went for a pre-recorded documentary, presented by singer, Michelle McManus.

While its viewing figure will have been substantially down on the 2008/09 show, a spokesperson said: “STV had a fantastic line-up of Hogmanay programming to celebrate the best of Scottish talent, entertainment and music, with something for everyone. We hope that viewers enjoyed a great evening of festive television on STV to bring in the New Year.”
