The Media in Figures: ‘Creative industries’ economic estimates

BEGINS a media release issued by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport, at Westminster:”New figures published today reveal that the UK’s ‘creative industries’, which includes the film, television and music industries, are now worth £76.9 billion per year to the UK economy. This massive contribution is an all-time high and equates to £8.8 million per hour, or £146,000 every single minute, playing a key role in the [UK] Government’s long-term economic plan.”

The key findings are as follows…

Creative Economy Employment (1997 – 2013)

* 2.62 million jobs were in the ‘creative economy’ in 2013, one in 12 UK jobs;

* Employment within the ‘creative economy’ grew by 66,000 (2.6 per cent) between 2012 and 2013, a higher rate than for the UK economy as a whole (1.6 per cent); and

* Between 1997 and 2013, employment in the ‘creative economy’ has increased from 1.81 million jobs to 2.62 million jobs. This was equivalent to a rise of 2.3 per cent each year, around four times greater than the 0.6 per cent increase each year in the number of jobs in the UK economy.

Creative Industries Employment (1997 – 2013)

* The ‘creative industries’ accounted for 1.71 million jobs in 2013, 5.6 per cent of total UK jobs; and a 1.4 per cent increase on 2012; and

* Over the longer term, the number of jobs within the ‘creative industries’ increased by 3.9 per cent each year between 1997 and 2013, compared to 0.6 per cent in the UK economy.

Gross Value Added (GVA) (1997 – 2013) – measured in current prices (i.e. not adjusted for inflation)

* GVA of the ‘creativeindustries’ was £76.9 billion in 2013 and accounted for five per cent of the UK economy. For the third year running, the proportion of total UK GVA accounted for by the ‘creative industries’ was higher than the year before, and at five per cent is now as high as has been recorded;

* GVA of the ‘creative industries’ increased by 9.9 per cent between 2012 and 2013. This was higher than any individual ‘Blue Book’ sector;

* Between 1997 and 2013, GVA of the ‘creative industries’ increased by 5.8 per cent each year compared to 4.2 per cent in the UK economy; and

* The GVA of the ‘creative Industries’ was four per cent of total UK GVA in 1997, but had increased to five per cent in 2013.

Exports of Services (1997 – 2012) – measured in current prices (i.e. not accounting for inflation)

* The value of services exported by the ‘creative industries’ was £17.3 billion in 2012, 8.8 per cent of total UK service exports;

* Between 2011 and 2012 the value of service exports from the ‘creative industries’ increased by 11.3 per cent. This compares with an increase of 2.8 per cent for total UK service exports; and

* Between 2004 and 2012, the proportion of total UK service exports which were from the ‘creative industries’ increased from 7.9 to 8.8 per cent. The value of services exported by the ‘creative industries’ increased by an average of 8.5 per cent each year between 2004 and 2012, compared to 6.9 percent for the UK economy.
