MacDonald moves into chief sportswriting slot

THE Herald newspaper has appointed a new chief sportswriter, to succeed Graham Spiers, who is now on ‘gardening leave’, ahead of joining a revamped Scottish edition of The Times.

Former chief sub, Hugh MacDonald is best known for his whimsical columns.

Long-established at the paper, well-liked, but relatively new to ‘match reporting’, he takes over as the paper hatches plans – so Spike understands – to launch a daily, 16-page sports supplement.
