Communication workers’ campaign wins Scottish advertising accolade

A CAMPAIGN that helped the Communication Workers trade union force a government climb-down over Royal Mail privatisation plans has won the top prize at awards celebrating the best of advertising ideas dreamed up in Scotland.

Created by Edinburgh-based advertising agency, Mightysmall, the campaign picked up the ‘Grand prix’ award at the annual Scottish Advertising Awards, held on Friday evening at a gala dinner in Glasgow.

Chair of the judging panel, Dave Trott – whose credits include Toshiba’s ‘Hello Tosh’ and the ‘Ariston goes on and on and on’ adverts – chose Irn-Bru’s ‘Spot the Difference’ campaign for the ‘Chairman’s Award’.

Other top awards on the night went to Edinburgh-based ad agency, Newhaven (Advertising agency of the year), The Scottish Government (Client of the year), and Mediacom Edinburgh (Media agency of the year).

Meanwhile, a special award was reserved for TV commercials producer, Simon Mallinson, who was awarded an Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award. Mallinson runs MTP, the commercial production studio based in Glasgow that is behind many of Scotland’s most memorable adverts from the last two decades.

And a Lifetime Acheivement award went to Jan Morris, director of Mail Marketing Scotland and chair of the Direct Marketing Association Scotland.
