Press officer – Commonwealth Games, Queen’s Baton Relay and Culture Programme

IN 2014, Glasgow will be staging one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The Commonwealth Games attracts thousands of athletes and officials from 71 countries from across the globe, hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected and the global television and online audience will number in millions. The attention of the world’s media will also be focused on Glasgow in the run up to, and during, the Games

Within the Communications Department, there is currently an opportunity to join our Media Team as Press Officer, specifically looking after our Queen’s Baton Relay & Culture Programme. The Press Officer will quickly develop an excellent knowledge and understanding of Glasgow 2014 generally as well as specialist knowledge of key OC areas, giving them the ability to respond accurately and timeously to media enquiries. This will also including participating in the Media Team’s out of hours rota. They will also develop and deliver engaging content for the media, establishing relationships with relevant reporters and correspondents and utilising those relationships to target stories effectively.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in arts, culture and/or creative industries, having worked within an arts, events or tourism marketing or press team or have a background in arts or cultural journalism. They will be assertive and confident with an excellent network of contacts and excellent understanding of the creative landscape of Scotland as well as an ability to deliver community and cultural campaigns. They will also have to display excellent relationship building skills, establishing effective communications with Games Partners, and key stakeholders.

Glasgow 2014 is a very fast paced and often high-pressured environment and applicants should be confident that they perform effectively under these circumstances while still maintaining accuracy and an eye for detail. It is important that the Press Officer has an excellent knowledge and understanding of the current Scottish political and economic environment.

Working towards an event like the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games isn’t an ordinary job.
