Media Release: One week left to enter the Scottish Press Awards

THE Sports Photographer of the Year category is back in the Scottish Press Awards for 2017 after the Scottish Newspaper Society editors’ committee, which organises the awards, responded to requests for its reinstatement.

As in previous years, there will be two photographic categories, for news photographer and sports photographer and entrants will be asked to submit a minimum of three and a maximum of five images in each category.

SNS director, John McLellan, said: “Photographers said they preferred two separate categories instead of one competition to find the Photographer of the Year and we have reacted positively.”

The deadline for entries to the 38th annual awards is just one week away on 5pm on Monday 16th January.

A judging panel of 25 leading media experts and former editors will assess all of the entries, which for the first time will have a majority of female members and no longer feature serving editors.

In another significant change, the external judges will be involved at all stages of the judging process – replacing a system in which they were only involved once entries had been whittled down to a short-list.

New categories have been introduced for digital team of the year and outstanding digital journalist to recognise the continued expansion and development of digital news publishing on all platforms.

There is also a new Sports Columnist of the Year category and the feature writer category has been expanded to include arts and entertainment.

The shortlist will be published in March 2017 and the winners will be announced at the awards ceremony and dinner on Thursday May 11, 2017, at the Radisson BLU Hotel in Glasgow.
