Media Release: Shortlists announced for 38th Scottish Press Awards

38th Scottish Press Awards

THE final shortlists for the 2017 Scottish Press Awards have been announced by the Scottish Newspaper Society.

A judging panel of 25 leading media figures and former editors, which for the first time in the competition’s history had a majority of female members, whittled down the final selections for the category shortlists from a record number of entries received from national and regional titles.

New categories have been introduced for ‘digital team of the year’ and ‘outstanding digital journalist’ to recognise the continued expansion and development of digital news publishing on all platforms.

The winners of the prestigious prizes will be announced at the Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Thursday May 11, 2017, at the Radisson BLU Hotel in Glasgow.

The awards are organised by the Scottish Newspaper Society and its director, John McLellan, said: “The judges had an incredibly difficult task to produce the list of finalists because of the quality of the submissions and the very best of Scottish media talent is represented in every category.

“It’s particularly good to see some new names on the shortlists for the digital categories added this year.

“Newspapers are at the very heart of the political and social debate in Scotland and the year ahead promises to be another in which our newspapers will play a vital role in scrutinising, questioning and interpreting the actions of politicians of all parties.”

The only shortlist still to be decided is the Weekly Newspaper of the Year, with the judges in this category due to meet on Tuesday the 21st March.

Other coveted titles to be awarded at the ceremony include: Scoop of the Year, Front Page of the Year, Campaign of the Year, Journalist of the Year and Newspaper of the Year.
