Media release: Scottish sports marketing agency to support international polo at the Coronation Cup

Hurlingham Polo

GLASGOW-based sports marketing agency, GRM, has announced sponsorship of the Argentine team at this year’s Hurlingham International Day, where Argentina will play England for polo’s Coronation Cup.

This flagship sporting event will take place Saturday 27th July at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in Ascot and showcase the very best of polo, with a selection of some of the world’s finest players.

Gordon Ritchie, managing director of GRM, said: “As a sports sponsorship marketing agency, we measure sponsorship and – alongside my colleague, James Sheehan – have decided to take advantage of this opportunity. This is one of the most prestigious events in the UK calendar and a great day to engage with our clients and friends of GRM.”

Gordon continued: “We have been working closely with Simon Hawkins of Hurlingham Polo and understand the quality and professionalism of the brand. The fact that the Hurlingham brand put back into the sport is in line with our values and we therefore believed that this was a relationship that went hand in hand.”

The Argentine team will include Alfonso Pieres Jr., Juan Britos, Bartolome Castagnola Jr. and Facundo Pieres.

David Woodd, chief executive of the HPA, commented: “It is a great honour to be playing against Argentina who dominate polo, worldwide. It is very exciting that GRM, with their extensive knowledge of sports marketing and sponsorship, have chosen the Coronation Cup for their first sponsorship in polo and we look forward to working together.”

Over 4,000 people attended last year’s International Day with the patronage of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH The Prince of Wales and sons, alongside other family members.

The International Day has a long-standing legacy and will be a brilliant and prestigious day of sporting entertainment.

The Coronation Cup is one of the older trophies in polo history. It was established in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V. The beautiful trophy was donated by the Ranelagh Club, and was played through 1911 and 1939.

After two post-war revivals, it has now been played since 1971. The event typically involves a test match between England and a guest country.
