GLENDA Jackson has triumphed at this year’s Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards, winning in the Leading Actress category for her exceptional performance in STV Productions’ single drama, Elizabeth is Missing.

Glenda Jackson picked up the award at a glittering virtual ceremony, which aired on BBC One this Friday evening.

Elizabeth is Missing was produced and filmed in Scotland for BBC One and was critically-acclaimed by UK and international media and audiences for its powerful performances and sensitive and authentic portrayal of dementia.

The film is based on the best-selling novel by Emma Healey and marked Glenda Jackson’s return to the screen after 27 years. She played Maud, a woman whose search for her missing friend, Elizabeth, takes on a poignant urgency as dementia threatens to erase all the clues. The film was broadcast on BBC One in December last year, to universal acclaim, attracting a raft of five star reviews.

Glenda Jackson said: “I’m very thankful to BAFTA for this award. Elizabeth is Missing was a wonderful
film to work on and the book by Emma Healey has been a revelation to me. There are so many families affected by dementia and the issue is wide spread, as far as the eye can see. I hope the film itself and this recognition will help to highlight the daily struggles that these families face.”

Sarah Brown, creative director of Drama at STV Productions, said: “It was a privilege to bring Emma Healey’s wonderful novel to the screen, and Glenda’s performance in the lead role was nothing short of exceptional. An actor with incredible energy and commitment, she portrayed a woman living with dementia in a sensitive and authentic way, which has resonated with people affected by the illness across the country. We at STV Productions are thrilled that she has been awarded the BAFTA, it is truly well-deserved.”

Elizabeth is Missing is co-funded by Sky Studios and international sales are handled by NBCU Global Distribution.
