LOCAL Edinburgh girl, Hollie Chambers, has been flying the flag for wood burning stove specialist Bonk & Co on a charity trek across Europe.

Hollie (18), who completed some work experience in the Bonk Edinburgh showroom earlier this year, has just completed a hitchhike to Morocco in support of Link Community Development.

Decked out in her distinctive Bonk & Co. t-shirt, the Newcastle University student said: “It was an experience to remember and, while it was not all plain sailing, we always had a smile on our faces and are delighted with our achievement.

“I promised the Bonk team I would wear a company t-shirt on my travels and I was amazed at the amount of people who stopped to offer me their support.

“A lot of people were also keen to find out more about Bonk and what the company does, so I was pleased to be able to spread the Bonk message!

“A huge thanks to Bonk & Co for its support, it’s great to see that local businesses are still willing to dig deep for a great cause despite the current economic climate.”

Says a spokesperson: “The Hitch is Link Community Development’s largest fundraising event and the biggest organised hitch-hike in the UK.

“Since it began in 1992, almost 7,000 Hitchers have safely and successfully completed the challenge, raising more than £3 million for charity.

“Link Community Development works at all levels of the education system to identify and remove the obstacles to quality education.

“The charity currently operates international programmes in rural districts of Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa, and Uganda, and there is demand for us to extend its work to other countries.”

Bonk Edinburgh’s manager, Alex Dolby, said: “We always love to get involved in local charity work and each year we come up with a few areas where we feel our donations can make a difference.

“So, while she was working with us, we became very interested in Hollie’s Link Community Hitch as the work Link Community Development does really makes a difference.

“We were all behind Hollie 100 per cent and the team always made a point of checking her progress once a day via her Hitch blog. This has obviously been a very positive experience for Hollie and we were delighted to be involved. We are very proud of her and what she has achieved. Well done Hollie!”
