Media Release: HIE celebrates biking world cup with brand new track

HIGHLANDS and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is adding to Lochaber’s excitement in welcoming thousands of people to the Mountain Bike World Cup this weekend, by contributing to a new intermediate downhill track at Aonach Mor, Fort William.

Confirmation of funding for the new route was announced just prior to this weekend’s event which sees 500 riders from over 30 countries competing for world titles in cross country, four-cross and downhill biking. When completed, the new descent will be aimed at holidaying riders and family groups rather than ‘hard core’ downhill practitioners.

Robert Muir, HIE’s area manager in Lochaber, said: “Operating company, Nevis Range, has been phenomenally successful in designing and creating downhill, and, in partnership with the Forestry Commission Scotland, cross country courses which attract riders from across the UK and the world to visit Lochaber.

“It’s a natural development to provide a route from the top station which is slightly less challenging than the competition track. It will offer a progressive option for aspiring downhill riders looking to develop their skills and open up the incredible experience of cycling down Aonach Mor to a wider range of age and ability levels.

“We are delighted to be assisting the development of this new track and to be supporting Nevis Range, in conjunction with the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, in its highly successful journey to become the top worldwide spot for quality mountain biking.”

The main contributors to the cost of the new track are Sportscotland, Nevis Range, and HIE, with further support from the Forestry Commission Scotland; West Highland Wheelers and the Outdoor Capital of the UK.
