Media Release: PriceYourMeal.com founder predicts new market for in-flight restaurant booking

THE founder of PriceYourMeal.com, the food auction website that allows users to bid for meals at top restaurants at a price that suits their pockets, has predicted that a new market for in-flight restaurant booking is set for take-off.

The bold prediction made by Sukhvir Dhillon, managing director of PriceYourMeal.com, follows the recent announcement by the European Commission that mobile phones will soon be able to be used aboard flights throughout European airspace.

Mr Dhillon said: “We currently have customers bidding for meals in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London online from as far afield as Texas, Oslo, Athens and Berlin. Until now, these customers have either had to place their bids prior to take-off or once they’ve landed at their destination, greatly restricting their ability to get the best deal for a meal.

“But air travellers will soon be able to participate in all the fun and excitement of bidding for meals and booking restaurants in-flight through their mobiles so they can look forward to a bargain meal as soon as they land at their particular destination. The obvious advantages that brings to air travellers means that there’s no doubt that the market for in-flight restaurant booking is about to take-off.”

Says a spokesperson: “The European Commission announcement follows a ruling by the communications regulator, Ofcom, for British aircraft to install systems that will allow passengers to make calls and send texts. The ruling means that British airlines can apply for the wavelengths needed to make calls in the air.

“On-board base stations, or picocells, which would be switched on at a height of 10,000ft (3,000m), will allow licensed aircraft to link up with mobile operators via satellite. Airlines BMI and Ryanair have already announced plans to install the technology.”

Launched in Glasgow in March 2006 and in Edinburgh a year later, last month’s London-launch of priceyourmeal.com precedes a nationwide rollout of the website which, since inception, has hosted some 100,000 auctions – a figure it hopes to double over the course of the next 12 months – with customers saving, on average, 50 per cent off the menu price of a meal.
