LEADING UK businessperson, Sir Anthony Cleaver, has been appointed chair of the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership (CNSRP) executive board.
The CNSRP was formed last year by key agencies charged with driving ahead initiatives to ameliorate the economic and social consequences of the run-down and eventual closure of the Dounreay nuclear plant. Currently, the site supports around 2,000 jobs in Caithness and North Sutherland.
The partnership has already published a 50-point action plan specifying a range of projects which it intends to deliver within proposed timescales.
The partnership’s executive board to be chaired by Sir Anthony, comprises the chief executives of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and The Highland Council, the regional director of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and a senior representative of the Scottish Government. The board meets quarterly.
Sir Anthony enjoyed a 30-year career with IBM, latterly as its chairman and chief executive. Following his retirement from IBM he became chairman of UKAEA leading the formation and flotation of AEA Technology.
As well as chairing numerous other companies and contributing to Government panels, he was chairman of the NDA for a three year term which concluded in July 2007.
Sir Anthony said: “I am very much looking forward to contributing to this vital initiative and trust that my experience of the nuclear industry coupled with my previous career in international business will equip me well for the challenges ahead.”
His appointment marks the end of the work of the Strategy Group chaired by John Thurso MP, for the last two years.

The partnership has already made good progress on preparing the way forward and Sir Anthony’s contribution will, without doubt, contribute significantly to the successful delivery of our agreed action plan.”
Chair of the CNSRP executive board is a non-remunerative role.
