Media Release: Welsh distillery appoint Scots advertising and communications agency

PENDERYN Distillery in Wales has been appointed Newhaven Communications to work across the portfolio of brands owned by the Penderyn Distillery in Wales. Penderyn is Wales’ only distillery and has already attracted both critical acclaim and public support for its single malt. Penderyn have also launched Brecon Gin, Brecon Five Vodka and a premium liqueur, Merlyn.

Work on the brands has already begun with Mediacom Scotland planning and buying the first campaign in Wales, due later this year. Commenting on the win, Jonathan Shinton said: “Penderyn contacted us by way of recommendation. They were looking for an agency that had big brand experience, a collective way of working that mirrored their own, whisky credentials and an appreciation of all things Welsh. We do quite well on those fronts.”

Commenting further, Jonathan adds: “‘We’ve had several meetings, been down to meet them at their HQ and got on really well. They’ve got great products combined with a small, totally committed team with real experience and robust financial backing.”

Gareth Howells adds: “We see this as a real privilege. The company is in its infancy but their un-erring commitment to brand quality, their Welsh roots and their role in the local community is truly inspiring.”

Neil Quigley, director, sales and operations at Penderyn, comments: “We are really pleased to be making this strategically important appointment. As a small, independent distillery it is critical to us to find an organisation who understand our passion for what we do and can translate that into communicating our aim of making our brands the ‘Drinks of Choice’ in Wales.”

About Penderyn DistilleryThe first seeds of an idea to bring back whisky distillation to Wales were sown in 1998 in a late night conversation between friends in a South Wales hostelry, and the Welsh Whisky Company was born. Construction for a distillery was completed in 2000, allowing production at Penderyn to start later that year.

Penderyn Single Malt Welsh Whisky was first launched on St David’s Day, 1st March 2004, to huge critical acclaim from both acknowledged whisky experts and ‘ordinary’ consumers.

The Penderyn Distillery uses a unique design of still for its malt whisky distillation. The still consists of a single ‘pot’ beneath a tall rectifying column and was developed by a team led by Dr David Faraday (a descendant of Sir Michael Faraday, discoverer of the electrolytic cell). Whilst the Scottish distilleries generally use two conventional stills for their production, and the Irish three, the technology developed at Penderyn enables an extremely clean and flavourful spirit to be produced from the single still. The design is also extremely energy efficient.

The Welsh Whisky Company has already won a number of prestigious awards for the quality and taste of the whisky and for its distinctive and stylish packaging. The company remains privately owned and managed by a committed and enthusiastic team of individuals. The next major development will be the construction of a visitors centre at the Penderyn Distillery, which will allow a greater number of whisky enthusiasts to learn more about distillation in Wales, to see the production process from beginning to end and to sample the company’s products for themselves.
