Media Release: Theatre company and stammering organisation combine to produce play

OUTSPOKEN
Performance and workshop based on stammering
In association with the British Stammering Association Scotland

16 March – 3 April 2009

ON 16 March 2009, TAG commences a very special tour of a brand new play written by Davey Anderson (Snuff, Liar).

Outspoken is the culmination of a forward-thinking project which TAG has been working on for the past two years with the British Stammering Association Scotland.

Working closely with participants from TAG’s drama workshop programme, Davey has been able to take inspiration from young people who stammer, to write a fast-paced, exciting and thought-provoking play about confidence, identity and the struggles faced when trying to fit in.

Three actors play a range of characters in the life of Danny who just happens to have a stammer.

“It used to be that I was the only person who stammered in the whole school. This was before Cameron showed up and ruined everything. Before he crash-landed on my patch and started breaking all the rules. Before Sandra turned on me. Before I entered into a dirty deal with big Graham and wee Jamesy. Before that incident by the pond”

Professional actors, Mary Gapinski, Steven Rae and William Ruane will perform Outspoken, which will tour with an accompanying workshop to schools in Glasgow, Edinburgh and South Lanarkshire.

Sponsorship from ScottishPower has made the Outspoken tour possible. This vital support has also assisted in the creation of a DVD and online resources for schools on the subject of stammering, using content generated by TAG’s workshop programme.

Heather McDonald, ScottishPower sponsorship manager, said: “ScottishPower is delighted to offer its support for this tour, and we hope that the play has a positive impact on all those who see it and that the workshops are well attended. TAG is passionate about the work that they do and I’m sure that this tour will inspire many people.”

BSA Scotland said: “Our partnership with TAG has been a huge success. We aim to raise awareness of stammering in Scotland and relish the opportunity to achieve this through the creation of exciting, high-quality drama. Outspoken will do more to challenge the stigma associated with stammering than any information leaflet.”
