Media Release: Radio Borders celebrates 20th anniversary on air

RADIO Borders celebrated 20 years on the air on Friday 22nd January 2010 by taking a step back in time to 1990.

The long running station marked its 20th anniversary by hosting a special birthday show and programming throughout the day.

Radio Borders brought the stations first managing director, Rod Webster, back on air and the first voice on air and former managing director, Danny Gallagher, to present the mid-morning show to mark the occasion.

Listeners could tune in to hear some of the big songs that were played on the first day of broadcasting – including ‘Wired for Sound’, by Cliff Richard, which was the first ever song played by Radio Borders.

At the time of the station launch, Kylie Minogue was at number one in the UK singles chart with ‘Tears on My Pillow’.

Says a spokesperson: “Initial listening figures 20 years ago at Radio Borders highlighted a 68 per cent reach and 16.8 hours of radio listening per person, totalling 1.4million hours – the biggest results ever in commercial history.”

Station staff and presenters, both past and present, along with friends of the station, held a party to celebrate the significant milestone.

Speaking about Radio Borders birthday, First Minister, Alex Salmond, said: “Happy Birthday! Having reached 20, almost the age of maturity, well that’s absolutely fantastic. I know what a great loyal fan-base/listener-base the Borders has.”

Radio Borders station director, Lynsey Graham, said:” We’re absolutely delighted to be celebrating our 20th birthday at the station. Our thanks go out to all our listeners and supporters because this milestone wouldn’t have been possible without them!

“I’m sure that we’ll have many more years bringing great quality music to the people of the Borders and look forward to producing more enjoyable entertainment for the area.”

To continue the celebrations, the station will be holding various events throughout the year – these will be announced shortly so soon tune in to find out what’s happening in the area.
