Media Release: Shelter Scotland calls on government to invest ‘new’ money in housing

SPEAKING following reports of £31 million for affordable housing in Scotland and ahead of the Budget debate in the Scottish Parliament today, Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, housing and homelessness charity, said:

“The £31 million reported as additional money for housing today is not new money. But is in fact part of a £54 million Barnett consequential package for housing announced last June.

“We await clarification from the Scottish Government during this afternoon’s debate as to whether this is in fact from that Barnett pot of money, or new, additional money. If it’s not new cash, we urge all parties for push for a last minute deal for housing. Without more money for homes Scotland’s housing crisis will deepen.”
