Media Release: International travel provider to work with Green Tourism Business Scheme

ONE of the world’s leading ‘one-stop shops’ for flights, accommodation, cruises and car rental is to promote Green Tourism Business Scheme members.

Travelocity, the travel deal specialists who own lastminute.com, is to feature members of the leading sustainable certification scheme in the UK in their Green Hotel Directory so travellers can find out exactly which businesses are genuinely committed to protecting the environment .

“There are a growing number of online booking agents now providing green options and the better ones are avoiding greenwash by only promoting those graded by a credible and recognised scheme,” said Andrea Nicholas of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, which honours businesses that demonstrate high levels of commitment in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable tourism with bronze, silver and gold awards.

“Travelocity are very diligent about how they choose the hotels which make it on to their Green Hotel Directory. By teaming up with Travelocity we’re aiming to highlight the service providers who really care about creating a sustainable business.”

GTBS members are scrutinised on 145 separate measures by qualified advisors before being appointed the relevant award, making it one of the most scrupulous green accreditation schemes in the world with over 2,200 members.

Points are awarded for a raft of measures such as installing efficient lighting and heating, nature conservation, use of renewable energy, buying local produce and community involvement.

The GTBS differs from other schemes by sending out independent auditors on a regular basis to ensure standards are being maintained and to give business owners advice about further improvements.

“We are delighted to join up with the GTBS, who run a very impressive programme, and from now on we are featuring their hotels on our Green Hotel Directory,” said Alison Presley, manager of Travelocity’s Travel for Good Program.

“We’ve found that having a green leaf flag has a very positive effect on sales for the hotel listed on our directory and we strive to ensure that only the people who are genuinely putting in the work get rewarded for their efforts.”
