Media Release: Musselburgh gamble on £200,000 Edinburgh Cup meeting pays off

MUSSELBURGH’S decision to plough money in to its richest-ever race day has been rewarded with some premium fields in the inaugural Edinburgh Cup meeting on Saturday. (June 5).

With £200,000 total prize money on offer at the East Lothian course and £80,000 tied to the feature race, the totesport.com Edinburgh Cup, general manager, Bill Farnsworth, is a satisfied man.

Musselburgh’s general manager said: “The long term aim is to make the Edinburgh Cup a £100,000 race and that will take time to build up but we are heading in the right direction if the quality of entries is anything to go by.

“The major stables are represented and I see Sir Michael Stoute and Sir Mark Prescott are sending horses north alongside Mick Channon and Mark Johnston. It’s safe to say the standard of horses entered on Saturday is as good as anything we have experienced at Musselburgh before.

“We already have our Ladies Day event which has sold out for the last three years but Edinburgh Cup day will prove as big a draw for the serious race goer who wants to see horseracing at its very best.”

The Edinburgh Cup is Scotland’s second richest flat race, second only to the Ayr Gold Cup, and run over the same distance as the Epsom Derby it is destined to attract colts and fillies with the potential to progress to Group races.

Support race on Saturday is the £50,000 Scottish Sprint Cup over five furlongs, also sponsored by the Tote, this race has built up a strong following at Musselburgh over the last five years.

“Channel 4 has been a great supporter of Musselburgh and is backing us with coverage on Derby Day. Our hope would be to get the Edinburgh Cup up to the £100,000 level as an early closing race, which will prove a strong attraction to the UK and Ireland’s leading stables,” said Farnsworth.

Advance ticket sales for Saturday are over the 4,000 mark so a large crowd can be expected, while Ladies Day on June 18 is heading for a fourth successive sell out with less than 1000 tickets remaining.
