Media Release: St. Enoch Centre wins top international award for supporting Glasgow’s unemployed

ST. Enoch Centre has scooped a prestigious international award from the world’s leading marketing body for global shopping centres for helping Glasgow’s job hunters find new work opportunities.

The centre beat strong competition to bag the ICSC Solal Silver Award at a glittering ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal on Thursday (17th June) for its St. Enoch Working employment initiative.

Against the backdrop of the current economic climate, St. Enoch Working was developed by the centre’s management team as an opportunity to work with the community and help people back into employment.

The project, which is a partnership between St. Enoch Centre, Glasgow’s Regeneration Agencies, JobCentre Plus and Skills Development Scotland, has supported jobseekers using vacancies created as a result of the centre’s £100m redevelopment.

More than 250 jobs have been filled through the St. Enoch Working initiative since September 2009 with over 29 retailers throughout the centre having used the service to find the perfect candidates for their vacancies.

Says a spokesperson: “The ICSC Solal Awards bring together the very best of retail marketing across the world to reward those with the most effective campaigns. The awards recognise best practice and outstanding marketing performance and are seen as a benchmark of quality throughout the industry.

“Over 152 entries from 18 countries were received for this year’s awards.”

Susan Nicol, general manager of St. Enoch Centre, said: “St. Enoch Centre has been shortlisted for these international industry awards for four years in a row and we are delighted to take home the ICSC Solal Silver Award for the St. Enoch Working initiative.

“As one of the city’s major employers we are dedicated to supporting the community by helping to open the door to a wide range of skills and employment options. St. Enoch Working has had a fantastic response from job hunters helping them to gain invaluable experience and training opportunities while providing employers with a strong workforce which meets their needs.

“It is an honour to win this prestigious award in recognition of the great service which St. Enoch Working provides and we hope that more of the city’s residents will register in order to take full advantage of the opportunities the project can offer.”
