Media Release: Perth baker in with the great and good of British baking

PERTH’S much-loved Murrays Bakery, renowned for their Scotch Pies and fancy pieces, have joined the cream of British Baking – thanks to a surprise visit by the BBC, while on location in Scone for the filming of the ‘The Great British Bake Off’.

Says a spokesperson: “The team accompanying the hit BBC2 TV series were so impressed by the traditional craft bakehouse, which has been part of the Murrays family bakery for four generations, that the bakery has been featured in the official book to accompany the hit BBC2 TV series.

“Throughout the TV series, ten contestants from across the nation battled it out to be crowned Britain’s Best Baker. Their recipes are included in the recently published ‘Great British Book of Baking’, which features over 120 best baking recipes from all over the British Isles and the people behind this popular culinary trend.”

Mrs Linda Hill, whose great grandfather founded the business in 1901, is featured in the book with trays of freshly baked sultana cakes.

There are also photographs of Murrays bakery staff in the bakehouse preparing a variety of fresh produce from scratch using raw ingredients and traditional baking methods which have been passed on through the generations.

Explaining how the bakery came to be featured in the ‘Great British Book of Baking’ Mrs Hill said: “A member of the crew came into the shop and told us they were filming in Scone for the Great British Bake Off and they noticed our traditional bakehouse.

“They were quite excited because they hadn’t yet come across any in their travels round the UK and asked if they could have a tour round, do some filming and take photographs.”

She continued: “They spent a few hours with us and I got on with other things.

“For one thing or another I didn’t think too much about it until one of our customers came into the shop to say she had just got her copy and we were featured in it. As you can imagine, it’s been quite a conversation piece with our customers, and our staff are delighted.”

Murrays employ 16 staff, including six bakers and two workers who prepare thousands of Scotch Pies and morning rolls every week and a variety of tea cakes and homebaking.

The bakery has recently employed a new bakery manager to introduce some new recipes for breads and vegetarian options which are being trialed over the coming weeks.

Adds Linda: “I’ve grown up with the bakery and I worked in the bakehouse during my school holidays so it’s easy to take it for granted, but we never do.

“We are very proud of their craft and the skills which go into making our products and we are always looking for ways to keep our customers coming back.

“With the new products we are introducing, and our unexpected appearance in the ‘Great British Book of Baking’ we hope our customers will not need any further convincing!”
