Media Release: Cancer support charity has a ball at dancing event

STAFF and volunteers from a local cancer support charity pulled on their dancing shoes last weekend and took to the dancefloor.

A team from CLAN Cancer Support – led by chief executive, Debbie Thomson – competed in the Wood Group Ballroom Dancing Challenge as part of the Aberdeen Corporate Decathlon 2011.

The event, which took place at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom on Friday and Saturday (May 20 and 21) was organised by Aberdeen-based company activitymix, which specialises in employee engagement programmes.

As well as competing on the dancefloor, the charity also organised a raffle which raised £2,800.

CLAN Cancer Support was selected as activitymix’s chosen charity of the year, and as part of its support, the company has offered CLAN the opportunity to enter a team in the Aberdeen corporate decathlon.

The CLAN team, which has already enjoyed a darts tournament, competed in a variety of dances, including the Tango and a Waltz.

Susan Crighton, fundraising manager at CLAN Cancer Support, said: “Everyone who took part in the event had a great time and it was fantastic to raise £2,800 from the raffle.

“The decathlon is providing us with a brilliant opportunity to take part in a bit of ‘team bonding’, which is obviously vital when working together for a charity.

“Our teams will include staff, volunteers and clients, seeing everyone from our chief executive to shop volunteers joining together.

“It is also providing us with a great opportunity to enjoy different activities and meet a huge number of new people.”

Adele Wilson, Aberdeen manager for activitymix, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support CLAN Cancer Support through the Corporate Decathlon, and are pleased that it’s having such a positive impact on levels of engagement of both employees and volunteers.

“Their dance team was magnificent at the weekend, as were the other 30 companies from around the city that took part.”
