Media Release: New divorce portal gives couples support

THE launch of a new portal, The Right Kind of Divorce, on Thursday 6th October – providing a pool of resources, guidance and access to the country’s leading advisors – is now available to hopefully help divorces become more amicable.

The brainchild of lawyers, Anne Dick from Mowat Hall Dick and Professor Alan Susskind from Harper Macleod LLP, the portal aims to provide, in one place, everything couples need to know when going through the separation process – making the process and choices available simpler, less stressful and more transparent.

The information on offer will come from a wide range of associations, bodies and advisors and varies from guidance on the division of money and property, to counselling and what to do to ensure the best interests of any children involved.

Through the portal, couples can also gain access to the country’s leading accountants, child psychologists, independent financial advisers, lawyers and psychotherapists.

Anne Dick, who has been a family lawyer for 36 years, said: “When a relationship is in trouble, there’s potential for misunderstanding and bitterness which will affect not just the couple but any children they have and the wider network of family and friends.

“The right assistance at an early stage can help a couple repair their relationship or to achieve a sustainable separation, whichever is more appropriate.

“Some people need financial guidance, some need emotional support, some need legal advice.

“Most need a combination of those elements. In some situations where there is violence or dishonesty the full protection of the legal framework in court proceedings is called for. The challenge is to achieve the right fit of resources.

“Uncertainty and lack of knowledge breeds stress and anxiety.

“Anything which reduces that will help promote the possibility of a managed transition rather than a battle.

“Alan and I wanted this website to be available to help people find the most constructive way through.

“We’ve been fortunate in having support and encouragement from like-minded colleagues from financial and counselling backgrounds.”

Professor Alan Susskind commented: “Anne and I created The Right Kind of Divorce portal after noticing our clients were not aware of the many options available to them, such as mediation and collaboration.

“The majority of people are under the impression they need to go through court in order to separate property, possessions and access to children; however, that is not the case.

|One of the main aims of the portal is to make couples aware that their difficulties are best settled in the most co-operative way appropriate to their circumstances, and in a manner which benefits the whole family.

“It’s about resolving disputes in a different way.”
