Media Release: Let it snow – but get ready with the Red Cross

THE British Red Cross is spearheading a campaign to help Scotland get ready for winter.

Working in partnership with the Scottish Government, the humanitarian organisation is offering advice and practical help in case the country is hit by another big freeze.

Remember last winter’s arctic conditions when life was made so difficult by snow, ice and freezing temperatures? Let’s not get caught out this time.

By taking a few simple steps we can all make life easier for ourselves when the mercury plummets.

The Red Cross, in partnership with the Scottish Government, is staging a week-long campaign between October 24 and 30 to help the nation get ready for winter.

The ‘Ready For Winter?’ campaign was officially launched on Monday, October 24.

As well as loads of helpful advice and hints, the humanitarian organisation will be giving away practical items to help people prepare for winter conditions.

Visitors to Red Cross charity shops have the chance to pick up a free, specially designed grab bag in which to store their emergency kit and a few handy items to start them off. They’ll also get advice on what other items they might need.

Norman McKinley, director of the Red Cross in Scotland, said: “Winter can be tough on everyone – especially vulnerable people – but there’s a lot we can do to prepare ourselves for extreme weather.

“The Red Cross, working with the Scottish Government, wants to help people get ready for winter and show them how easy it is.

“As an emergency response organisation, our volunteers help people who need it all year round, but we are especially busy in winter.

“We are very familiar with the difficulties snow and ice can cause the whole community.

“If everyone asks themselves how prepared they are in the home, on the road and in the community and takes steps to prepare for the season ahead, those difficulties can be greatly reduced.”

ENDS

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies  in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.
