SCOT, Mark Beaumont, the fastest man to cycle around the globe, has confirmed he will lead the national charge on Saturday 2nd June to set a new world record for the world’s largest Kilt Run.
The Perth Kilt Run, organised by Perth & Kinross Council as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, is growing in numbers but Scots have only three weeks left to get behind the calling to claim back the world record for running in their own national dress.
Mark Beaumont had issued a call to action earlier this year on social networking site Twitter, asking his 12,500 followers if they fancied “breaking a world record whilst running in your kilt?! Get involved the @theKiltRun in Perth on June 2nd. We need 2000 kilted runners!”.
However, at that time, his own wedding and a honeymoon was imminent, and he was unable to commit to the spectacle.
Now he’s freshly back from honeymoon, raring to go, and keen to get other Scots on board too.
He said: “Now is the time. Scotland should hold the record for the largest running event in its own national dress and the Canadians, who currently hold the record, already have 2000 runners signed up to don their kilts just a couple of weeks later.
“We need the clans and the people of Scotland to come together, don a kilt and run together to break this record.”
And he continued: “I’d also like to encourage the participants to raise money for PKAVS and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity whose vital, but seldom seen, work makes a huge difference to people’s lives.
“There are loads of other things to do and see in Perth on the day, so it should be great day out for families, and what better way to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by breaking a world record? Now that’s memorable.”
The Perth Kilt Run is being held as part of the Perth & Kinross Council’s celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Saturday 2nd June. 2000 kilted runners aged 12 and over are expected to take to the streets of the City of Perth, running a minimum of 100 metres, to steal the record back from their twin town of Perth, Ontario in Canada.
