Media Release: Beach volleyball star gets top marks for tweets from NSDesign

BEACH volleyball star, Zara Dampney, is already a winner – in a league table of Team GB’s top Twitter users.

The 26 year-old has just over 2,000 followers, a tiny number compared to her better known colleagues such as Andy Murray and Jessica Ennis.

But her down-to-earth mix of humour, behind the scenes chat and passion for her sport impressed social media specialists NSDesign, who’ve been analysing Tweets from many of the athletes representing Britain at the London games.

NSDesign’s managing director, Gary Ennis, said: “Zara Dampney is a great example of how to do Twitter well. She’s funny, personal, shares relevant information and actually takes time to listen to her fans and talk back to them.

“Most importantly she understands that pictures make Tweets much more engaging, and she shares lots of them.”

Scots feature prominently in the league table, which can be seen in full at

They include cycling great Sir Chris Hoy, swimmer Hannah Miley and badminton star Imogen Bankier.

Says a spokesperson: “Twitter first made the headlines in 2008 fueled by celebs such as Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand who promoted it on their TV and radio programmes. Earlier this year, the social network revealed it now has more than ten million active users in the UK.

“Businesses are fighting for a slice of this massive audience with many diverting part of their advertising budgets into social media campaigns.”

NSDesign delivers training courses and consultancy to help them do it well.

The company’s recent clients include Eastern Western Motor Group, the Customer Contact Association, several local authorities and hundreds of companies in the UK’s small/medium business community.

Ennis adds: “Athletes are in a sense very small businesses.

“They want a higher profile, and need to please sponsors. But some members of Team GB, and indeed some businesses, clearly have no strategy when they’re using social media and simply broadcast the first thing that comes into their heads.

“That’s where the trouble starts. I’d urge every business using any form of social media to set clear goals and objectives, plan what they’re going to say, and to carefully monitor the impact of it all.

“Businesses that get the best results from social media have the entire company involved from the boardroom to the shop floor, rather than restricting it to the marketing team. And the best way to start is with a good training programme.”
