Media Release: Oldest dancer joins first birthday celebrations for weekly tea dance at the Avenue

Tea Dance birthday

THE weekly tea dance at Primavera Bistro at The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns celebrated its first birthday last week – and 92 year-old regular dancer, Terri, was on hand to blow out the candles on the birthday cake.

Liz Hannah, of Phoenix Dance School, said: “Our weekly tea dances have proved a big hit with locals, attracting around 40 dancers a week.

“Our dancers have a mixed age group, though typically age from their 40s upwards – but given that we have kids during the summer holidays, you might say that our dancers range from nine to their nineties!

“Our oldest dancer, Terri, who was a ballroom dancer in her younger days, really enjoys the weekly tea dance and always says that it makes her week!”

In addition to a fun social dancing programme, sessions typically include a short section for instruction on some basic dance moves, including samba and ballroom.

And the good news is that participation is free, provided dancers buy a tea, coffee or other beverage from Primavera.

Michelle McCabe, centre manager at The Avenue, said: “Not only do tea dances offer a fun way to meet people or catch up with friends, but dancing down The Avenue offers visitors a chance to show off or brush up their fox trots, before or after a bout of shopping, while Primavera Bistro provides the perfect spot to wind down over a bite to eat.”

Tea dances at the Avenue, open to accomplished and novice dancers alike, take place every Thursday from 7pm till 9pm at Primavera Bistro.

The Avenue Shopping Centre, managed by commercial property consultancy BTWShiells, offers shoppers an alternative to sprawling trolley-dash shopping culture with a comprehensive range of outlets offering a warm and welcoming shopping experience conveniently located on the outskirts of Glasgow city centre.
