Media Release: Scotland’s students prepare for major sporting success

WORLD Junior Championship curling medallists will announce the 150 students nationwide to receive scholarship support from Winning Students in 2012/13 as they bid for Olympic, World and Commonwealth success.

Winning Students, funded by the Scottish Funding Council, is Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme for student athletes. It provides funding and academic flexibility to help students achieve their potential.

Curling is the latest sport to be added to Winning Students, the programme which supported 11 students at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. A further 29 students competed at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and many are now busy training and studying towards future winter Olympics and Glasgow 2014.

Dave Crosbee, performance director with British & Scottish Curling is available for interview to discuss the continued professionalisation of curling and the new partnership with Winning Students which sees the establishment of a performance centre at the Stirling Sports Village.

The student athletes are also available for interview as is Winning Students programme co-ordinator, Jason Atkins.

Student biographies

Kyle Smith, 20, from Perth is a student at Scotland’s Rural College. Kyle Waddell, 18, from Hamilton is a student at City of Glasgow College. The duo are one half of the team which won the 2012 Scottish Junior Championship and earned a bronze medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships.

Hannah Fleming, 21, from Lockerbie is a student at Edinburgh Napier University. Abi Brown, 19, from Stranraer is a student at the University of Dundee. The duo are one half of the team which won the Scottish Junior Championship and the gold medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships.
