Media Release: Landmark Aberdeen hotel seeks help for 120th anniversary celebrations

A LANDMARK Aberdeen hotel is calling on local people to help it celebrate a milestone anniversary.

The Caledonian by Thistle – affectionately known by many as ‘The Caley’ – is gearing up to celebrate its 120th anniversary and staff are hoping that local people will get in touch to share their memories and memorabilia from the hotel’s history.

The celebrations will take the form of a public exhibition which will run in the hotel between 11am and 4pm on January 26th and 27th.

The iconic building on Aberdeen’s Union Terrace has long been a popular meeting, dining and event venue and its enviable location within the city centre just a stone’s throw from His Majesty’s Theatre has, over the years, made the hotel a firm favourite with stars of the stage and screen with visitors including the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Lulu, actor Clark Gable and comedy duo Laurel and Hardy who visited the hotel in 1933.

Royalty has also graced the hotel and the Caley was favoured by Queen Victoria who hosted various dinners there, using it as an alternative dining venue for visitors to Balmoral Castle on Deeside.

These private events were held in a dining room on the first floor, enjoying splendid views over nearby Union Terrace gardens.

It was in the gardens that a private railway station was created especially for the Queen, with a now inaccessible tunnel linking the platform to the hotel basement to enable her to enter and exit the hotel away from the public gaze.

Commenting on plans for the exhibition, Caledonian by Thistle general manager, Jane Bourque, said: “The building is regarded with a huge amount of nostalgia and fondness by people living both locally and further afield.

“It has an amazing history and we hope that local residents will help us to provide an exhibition which offers a fitting tribute to the past and gives an insight into our plans for the future.

“We hope that people will lend us items to use in that exhibition and these may range from photos, menus and room service cards to wedding invitations or even old hotel uniforms.”
