SEAFOOD Scotland is continuing its highly successful Seafood in Schools programme with an exciting, interactive event at Bathgate Academy, West Lothian, on the 30th and 31st of January 2013.
Over 200 pupils from the high school and local primary schools will be attending the event.
The children will enjoy three workshops with their classmates, learning where seafood comes from, how healthy it is, and how it gets to their plates.
A selection of fish and shellfish will be available to taste, and pupils will have the opportunity to see and handle fresh, live species including crab, lobster, cod, monkfish and even squid.
The Fish is the Dish project, run by Seafish to promote the idea that ‘fish is easy and healthy’ particularly to mothers, is getting involved in the first day of the event.
Industry professionals from Young’s Seafood and local Waitrose stores will be providing supplies and lending expertise to the event.
Leendert den Hollander, chief executive of Young’s Seafood Limited, said: “We’re proud to be supporting this fantastic initiative, which is helping to educate children about the health benefits of eating a wide variety of fish and seafood.
“Not enough people eat the recommended level of two portions of fish a week, and this session is a great way to bring this alive for the next generation.
“We believe that protecting our seas and inspiring people to eat more fish are part of the same story. This work is part of our ‘2 x a Week’ campaign, to encourage people to choose more responsibly sourced fish, and our Fish for Life commitments to the community.”
At lunchtimes, all pupils at Bathgate Academy will have the opportunity to taste seafood canapés prepared specially for them by the dinner ladies, who are keen to get involved.
Parents, grandparents, carers, siblings and guardians are all encouraged to attend a community event on the evening of the first day (30th January, from 16.30-18.30), which will give them an opportunity to enjoy the same workshops and to sample seafood delicacies.
In addition to students fromBathgateAcademy, classes will also attend from Balbardie,Blackburn, Boghall, Murrayfield and Simpson primary schools.

The event will be held from 9.30-15.30 on the 30th and 31st January 2013. Each day will comprise four one-hour sessions during which time, three 20-minute workshops will be held with an hour’s break for lunch each day at 13.15.
