Media Release: Local media to go the extra mile for CLAN in cycling challenge

MEDIA professionals in Aberdeen are gearing up for a cycling challenge which will see them go that extra mile to raise £10,000 for a North-east cancer charity.

Journalists, broadcasters and PR professionals will lock handlebars in a static cycling challenge, Cycle for CLAN, where they will compete in teams to see who can cover the most miles.

Four teams from the Evening Express, Original 106, The BIG Partnership and Citrus:mix will battle it out at the Bon Accord Centre on Saturday, May 4 from Midday to 4pm.

Cycle for CLAN, which is sponsored by Aberdeen firm Meta, has been organised by media students from Robert Gordon University (RGU) who have been working with CLAN Cancer Support (CLAN) to help the charity celebrate its 30th anniversary.

The students are aiming to raise £10,000 to allow the local charity to purchase a car. CLAN has recently expanded its support services in North Aberdeenshire, and the purchase of a fully-liveried car will enable CLAN’s local co-ordinator to cover the large geographical area whilst also raising CLAN’s profile.

Susan Crighton, CLAN’s fundraising manager, said: “We are delighted Robert Gordon University has chosen CLAN Cancer Support as its nominated charity for this project.

“Ten teams were challenged to organise and implement an event which would raise funds and awareness of CLAN in our 30th anniversary year. I’m proud to say that the students have more than risen to that challenge.

“I’m sure that ‘Cycle for CLAN’ will engender some healthy competition to see which bike travels furthest and by staging this event in the centre of town on a Saturday afternoon the teams will certainly help to raise CLAN’s profile.”

Each team will compete to cycle the furthest distance on virtual reality cycle simulators, which have previously been used by Sky Sports and ESPN.

They will race against each other on a scenic track in Italy, which will be displayed on plasma screens for everyone to see. The teams will also be looking for members of the public to hop on the bikes to help them win.

As well as trying to cycle the farthest, teams will also be competing to raise the most money for CLAN and donations can be made to each team during the challenge.

There will also be a raffle at the event with a number of prizes on offer which have been donated by north-east companies.

These include: dinner, bed and breakfast for two at Ardoe House Hotel and Spa; a Juicy Couture watch from Finnies; a voucher for white water rafting with Ace Adventure and more.

Raffle tickets can be purchased throughout the event and the prizes will be drawn at 4pm after the cycling challenge has ended.
